DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, grade 940 Special, 18S, GF OF original case with unusual combination of hinged front and threaded rear, SW-LS, WE-DSD, fully capped lever escapement, 21J, full gilt damascene finish, s#516624. Fully gilt damascene plate finish is extremely unusual for Hamilton, and the pattern of this example's damascene differs notably from what is found on the more typical 2-tone gilt & NI damascened 940 Specials that we have observed. This example is from a group of 25 consecutive numbered grade 940 movements, serials 516601 to 516625, that are listed in the Hamilton factory ledger as sold to the Geo B Barrett Co of Pittsburgh, Pa in fall of 1906.
CONDITION: Mvt: Ticking sluggishly on a full wind, OH recommended, excellent mvt condition overall, strong gilt color, a few scattered MFS, some mild very fine rub lines on barrel bridge, small dark spot on foot of balance cock; dial with light outer chapter hls at 7 and 8, mild FS at edge between 7 and 8; case shows ample wear, some scratches on back, scattered FS and profusion of MFS, ding at center of back, ET to rear entirely lost, significant areas of wear through to brass; tight brass bow with tool marks, crown shows medium wear; glass crystal with edge chips at upper right.
